Sergei Paradjanov’s unfinished project. The «Kyiv Frescoes» script is built entirely on contrasts — of texture, sound, color, and character. Here, Paradjanov appears as the «almighty god of detail». His keen ear picks up every part played by each «instrument» in the «orchestra of the big city»: the clanging of metal, the hiss of tires on wet asphalt, human voices, and monotonous dripping of a lingering autumn rain…
After the screen tests were filmed, the studio’s management decided to halt the production of «an entirely impressionistic film, imbued with a pacifist idea». All that remained were fifteen minutes of screen tests, which survived thanks to a trick by cinematographer Oleksandr Antypenko — he presented them as his diploma work.
The test études for the film were presented as part of Paradjanov’s retrospective at the Munich International Film Festival in 1988. Afterward, the world’s cinematic press hailed them as «innovative» and «a brilliant example of avant-garde cinema».
