A mystical drama based on the stories of the master of fantastic prose, Valerii Shevchuk. She teaches her all the secrets of the magical craft, forgetting to reveal just one – the girl will have to pay a great price for her gift.
“The Voice of Grass” is the second feature film by Nataliya Motuzko, created at the Odesa Film Studio. Drawing inspiration from Ukrainian mythology, the director crafted an unusual, magical, somewhat unsettling film. She turns to the traditions of Ukrainian poetic cinema and attempts to blend them with elements of fantasy. The film was shot in Ukrainian, a rarity for the studio at that time.
Like most Ukrainian films from the early 1990s, “The Voice of Grass” essentially had no theatrical distribution history and was almost unknown to the Ukrainian audience. At the same time, the film was showcased at the Berlin Film Festival in the “Panorama” section in 1995, where it received positive reviews, including as an example of feminist cinema. Later, “The Voice of Grass” was repeatedly broadcast on television. The film eventually found its audience and attained cult status.
“The Voice of Grass” was digitally remastered by the Dovzhenko Center’s Film Laboratory in 2023.
