A strong wind sweeps the young man Orest, the son of a Ukrainian emigrant, back to a Ukrainian village and separates him from his beloved. However, brave Orest, caught in a web of extraordinary events, is determined to reunite with his love.
The events of “Fuchzhou” take place at the beginning of the 20th century, although the setting’s time and place are quite fluid. Among the film’s locations are settlements along the Dnipro River, the shores of Florida, and even the Bermuda Triangle. The film is divided into two parts. In the first, the “Ukrainian” part, Mykhailo Illienko seeks to merge Ukrainian folklore and demonology with elements of fantasy and a touch of irony. The second part, which could be called the “American” part, is a parody of popular genres — spaghetti Westerns and adventure films.
As in magical realism, the boundaries between dreams and reality blur in Mykhailo Illienko’s film. Filled with irony, legends, fables, and anecdotes, the film contrasts with Ukrainian poetic cinema while simultaneously remaining faithful to its traditions.
