Films from the Bundesarchiv collection

Unique fiction, animated, and documentary films that were long considered lost, but have been preserved in the German Federal Archives (Bundesarchiv). In 2024, restored digital copies were transferred to the Dovzhenko Centre with the assistance of Adelheid Heftberger and the Bundesarchiv team, and of Ivan Kozlenko.

Films’ copies were transferred to Germany during the Second World War. Their return will help fill the blank spaces in the history of Ukrainian cinema. Among the most remarkable discoveries are two animated films from the 1930s, which demonstrate the high level of development that the art of animation had reached before it was interrupted for twenty years in the 1940s.

Also valuable are the documentary films and chronicles, which allow us to see Ukrainian cities before the sweeping transformations brought about by the destruction during the Second World War.
