Sergei Paradjanov: Screen Tests

To mark the centenary of the celebrated filmmaker, the Dovzhenko Centre presents a collection of works from Sergei Paradjanov’s early Ukrainian period.

The selection includes documentaries made for television, a feature film he was forced to complete after its original director was removed from the project, and experimental screen tests for an ambitious, unrealized film about Kyiv.

Even before “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors” announced the arrival of a new master of Ukrainian and world cinema, Paradjanov’s films were already drawing inspiration from the textures, visual language, and sounds of folk culture. Although the director himself did not think highly of these early works, they laid the foundations for the artistic explorations that would later define his unique cinematic style.
